Who We Are

We are the Military & Veterans Services Center, a dedicated and welcoming hub within the academic community, committed to supporting military-connected students.

At the Military & Veterans Services Center, our mission is to provide unwavering support, guidance, and resources to empower military-connected students as they transition from service to successful academic and civilian life. We are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment that honors the sacrifices and unique experiences of our student veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, National Guard members, and military dependents. Through tailored services, comprehensive programs, and a strong sense of camaraderie, we aim to foster personal and academic growth, enhance well-being, and cultivate a strong community of empowered individuals who are poised to excel both in their educational pursuits and beyond.

At the MVSC, our core values shape how we support military-connected students in their academic and personal journeys. We are committed to fostering an environment where students can thrive and reach their fullest potential. Our core values are outlined below:

  1. Empowerment: We empower military-connected students to achieve their academic and personal goals through comprehensive support and resources, enabling them to thrive in a civilian and academic setting.
  2. Community: We cultivate a sense of belonging and camaraderie among military-connected students, creating a supportive network that extends beyond the classroom and contributes to a successful transition to civilian life.
  3. Respect: We honor the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and contributions of our military-connected students, promoting a culture of respect, understanding, and appreciation.
Inclusivity: We ensure that all military-connected individuals, regardless of their service branch, background, or experiences, feel welcomed, respected, and valued in our center.
  4. Excellence: We are committed to delivering exceptional services, programs, and resources that meet the unique needs of military-connected students, setting a standard of excellence that supports their academic success and personal growth.

The Military & Veterans Services Center (MVSC) was founded in the Spring of 2016 through the dedicated work of the campus Student Veterans Association (SVA) and many faculty and staff. This initiative was implemented by the Student Veterans Association’s advisor, Steve Tupper, and its founder and president, Garrett Coffey.

The SVA was founded in 2013 to support student veterans on and off the S&T campus.  In the spring of 2015, Tupper and Coffey were awarded a $10,000 grant from the Student Veterans of America (of which their organization is a chapter) and Home Depot to build a veterans center on campus.

S&T supported the work of the SVA and the campus service members by funding the MVSC as a permanent campus office, and by providing resources and staff. A location was established near campus, ground floor of the Baptist Student Union at 610 W. 10th Street.
