Here are a list of links and things you're going to want to understand, so you can jump into your education with your finances squared away, and with the maximum military credit you can obtain.

  • Future Students: This is the place to apply, and it also provides additional information specifically for military-connected students.
  • MO Returning Heroes Act: The state of Missouri offers the MO Returning Heroes Act to eligible service members to help defray the cost of college.
  • Veteran Access: The Veterans Choice and Accountability Act allows eligible veterans to receive in-state tuition. Check your eligibility.
  • JST Brochure: Finally, obtain your Joint Services Transcript, to see if your training is eligible for college credit.
  • Tuition Assistance & Top Up: Click here if you are using Tuition Assistance, or the TA Top Up. The Tuition Assistance (TA) program provides financial assistance for voluntary off-duty education programs in support of a Soldier's professional and personal self-development goals. 

Here are several useful links to VA educational benefits, as well as a brief description to help you understand and select the best one for you.

  • GI Bill: VA Site.
  • Post 9/11 GI Bill: A popular choice for many service members, offering up to full coverage of in-state tuition (depending on eligibility and enrollment status), along with a housing allowance and book stipend. Additionally, you can transfer your benefits to a spouse or dependent if needed.
  • Montgomery GI Bill: A time-tested option to help cover college costs. By combining your Montgomery GI Bill benefits with a state tuition assistance program, like the Missouri Returning Heroes Act, you could receive even greater benefits. You can calculate the potential savings yourself, or reach out to our office for help.

  • REAP & VEAP: Educational Assistance Programs for the Reserve and Veterans respectively.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment (VR&E, or VOC Rehab): Assistance to help disabled veterans get back on track, and back to the productive and fulfilling lifestyle they deserve.

We have put together a list of Military-Connected specific scholarships to help cover expenses while pursuing your education. This list is regularly updated to ensure you have access to the latest opportunities and is not a complete list. We have included a link for more information including any necessary timelines and/or eligibility in the links below.

American Legion Scholarships

The American Legion offers a variety of college and vocational or trade school scholarships that support academic achievement, leadership, and military-connected families. These programs help eligible students nationwide to pursue higher education and achieve their goals. From the Samsung American Legion Scholarship for Boys State and Girls State participants to the needs-based Legacy Scholarship for children of post-9/11 fallen service members or disabled veterans, The American Legion invests in future leaders. Other awards include scholarships for Legion Baseball players, National Oratorical Contest finalists, Eagle Scouts, Junior Shooting Sports champions and ANAVICUS scholars. Each program reflects The American Legion’s commitment to youth, education, and citizenship.

American Veterans (AMVETS) Scholarships

AMVETS is proud to offer scholarships/grants to our nation’s Veterans, Active Duty, Guard and Reserves; their Spouses as well as their Children and Grandchildren. AMVETS scholarships are designed to fulfill a financial gap after all Federal/State grants and/or scholarships available to an eligible applicant have been exhausted.

AFCEA International and its chapters and corporate partners offer a variety of scholarships. They also include ROTC and STEM scholarships.

The AAAA Scholarship Foundation, Inc., is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation established to render financial assistance for the college-level education of members of the Army Aviation Association of America, Inc. (AAAA). Spouses, children, grandchildren and unmarried siblings of current and deceased AAAA members are also eligible.

Army Emergency Relief (AER) Scholarships

Assistance for higher education and professional certifications. AER has several scholarships available to various demographics. Army Emergency Relief provides scholarships for dependent children and spouses of active duty and retired Soldiers.

ARMY Scholarship Foundation

The Army Scholarship Foundation (ASF) awards one-year financial scholarships on an annual basis to qualified and deserving students. The scholarships are a means to reward Army families for the sacrifices our soldiers make every day to serve their nation and as a way to help their spouses and children become leaders in American society. As part of the application and review process, ASF aims to get a complete picture of the student and family.

AUSA Premium Members, Association Members, and their dependents (to include children, spouses, and grandchildren) are eligible to apply.

Boren Awards for International Study

Boren Awards are scholarships and fellowships for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students committed to long-term overseas study and to public service. As a condition of their award, Boren Scholars and Fellows agree to utilize their skills within the federal government by seeking and securing national security employment for at least one year, strengthening the federal workforce and enhancing U.S. capabilities, deterrence, and readiness.

Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship

The Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship provides eligible veterans and dependents in high-demand fields with the chance to extend their Post-9/11 GI Bill or Fry Scholarship benefits. This can add up to nine additional months or $30,000 in benefits.

Fallen Patriots - College for their children

Their mission is to provide college and trade school scholarships, educational assistance, and career support to military children who lost a parent in the line of duty. Behind every Fallen Patriots scholarship is a story of loss, perseverance, and hope. While their mission centers on educational support, our work goes far beyond tuition. They walk alongside our scholars from high school through college and trade school — and beyond — providing not only scholarships and counseling, but pre-college support, career guidance, and a community that understands and honors their sacrifice.

Federal Employee Education & Assistance Fund (FEEA) Scholarships

Since 1986, FEEA has given over 11,000 merit-based scholarships to federal public servants, their spouses, children, and grandchildren. An additional nearly 200 scholarships to surviving children whose federal employee parents died or were severely injured in the line of duty during terrorist attacks. Collectively, their scholarship program to date totals over $14 million. FEEA champions the pursuit of higher education and each year supports over 200 students with merit-based scholarships.

The Scholarships for Military Children Program is designed to award scholarships annually at each commissary operated by the Defense Commissary Agency worldwide, with funding provided through generous contributions.

Folded Flag Foundation

The Folded Flag Foundation provides educational scholarships and support grants to the spouses and children of the U.S. military and government personnel who died as a result of hostile action or in an accident related to U.S. combat operations. For college-bound spouses and children, The Folded Flag Foundation provides scholarships and educational grants to cover tuition and fees, books, computers, living expenses (to include child care for students with young children), tutoring, test preparation services and career preparation expenses (internships, resume writing workshops, interview preparation training, etc.).

Folds of Honor Scholarship

Started by Lt Col Dan Rooney in 2007, they have made nearly 62,000 education scholarship awards for Military and First Responders.

Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund

The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund is for the children of military personnel who have been killed or have been deemed 100% totally and permanently disabled from a combat mission or training accident. Students wishing to apply for a Freedom Alliance scholarship should review the following criteria to ensure they meet the eligibility requirements set forth by the Freedom Alliance Board of Directors.

Hope for the Warriors

Since 2006, Hope for the Warriors Spouse and Caregiver Scholarship Program has awarded more than $640,000 in scholarships to help military families thrive through education. Whether you’re taking your first class or pursuing an advanced degree, we’re with you every step of the way. Scholarships are available for accredited U.S. colleges, universities, and trade schools. Funds are paid directly to the institution to cover tuition, books, and required supplies.

Military Family Support (MFS)

Thanks to significant legacy gifts and donations from generous donors, MFS began its scholarship program in 1993 with the award of a $4,000 grant to a deserving high school senior. Since that time, they've been able to give scholarships to hundreds of students, with awards ranging from $4,000 to $12,000, distributed over a 4-year period. To date, they have given over $1.5 Million in scholarship funding.

Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) Scholarship Fund

The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) established the MOAA Scholarship Fund in 1948 to provide educational assistance benefits to children of military families. Supporting one of the association's founding principles: education is the cornerstone of a strong democracy, the Scholarship Fund aims to remove or lessen the financial burden that comes along with continuing education through the Education Assistance Program.

National Military Family Association (NMFA)

Since 2004, NMFA has cheered on military spouses by awarding scholarships to help pay for everything from GED’s to PhD’s, professional licenses and certifications, including re-licensure, business and entrepreneurial expenses, supervised clinical hours, continuing education courses, and more.

Operation Second Chance

The OSC Scholarship Program seeks to further the organization’s mission of support for wounded, ill, and injured service members/veterans and their families through need-based dependent financial assistance grants, to aid in the pursuit of higher education. During each academic period, OSC will award grants of up to $5000 to a select number of dependent children who are high school seniors.

Pat Tillman Foundation

The Pat Tillman Scholar Program provides educational scholarships and leadership development for active-duty service members, veterans, and spouses. This program covers tuition, books, and living expenses for full-time students. Tillman Scholars also join a community of peers, mentors, and industry leaders. They receive lifelong leadership development, mentorship, and networking opportunities. The scholarship honors Pat Tillman’s legacy of service beyond self. Pat left his NFL career to serve in the Army Rangers and died in Afghanistan in 2004.

Purple Heart Scholarship Program

The Purple Heart Scholarship Program is a competitive program that awards scholarships to Purple Heart recipients and their spouses, children, and grandchildren each year. At least one applicant with military service will be awarded the Navy SEAL LT Michael Murphy Memorial Award.

Special Operations Warriors Foundations (SOWF) College Scholarships

Special Operations Warrior Foundation ensures each student has the resources to attend the best college for which he or she qualifies. Their scholarships are grants, not loans, and can be used at four-year private and public schools, and two-year community colleges, vocational-technical training, and career institutions. By setting the expectation for higher education, and supporting each of their student’s goals individually, our scholarship recipients are much more likely to attend, and graduate college as compared to the national average.

The VFW is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation. If you are a democracy-loving high school student interested in a $35,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you.

Wartime Veteran's Survivors Grant Program

The Wartime Veteran’s Survivor Grants are available annually to children and spouses of Veterans whose deaths or injuries were either a result of combat action or were attributed to an illness that was contracted while serving in combat action, or who became 80 percent disabled as a result of injuries or accidents sustained in combat action since Sept. 11, 2001.

Missouri Returning Heroes Act

The Missouri Returning Heroes Act, Section 173.900, RSMo, established August 28, 2008, as amended effective August 28, 2019, provides reduced tuition for certain combat veterans attending public institutions of higher education. For more details, visit the link below.

Veteran Enrollment Data Form (VEDF)

Here is the Veteran Enrollment Data Form provided by our Registrar's Office, which is required to certify your enrollment and indicate your intention to receive VA benefits. Complete the form and email it to our School Certifying Official. Ensure your courses meet your degree requirements or are prerequisites, as the VA will not cover courses outside of these. If you need a substitution waiver for a class, be sure to email the signed copy to our School Certifying Official for verification and certification. If your courses change, add, or drop you will need to email an updated VEDF.

Explore a range of non-education benefits offered by the VA to support your health, well-being, and financial needs. From health care and disability claims to specialized programs for veterans and their families, these services are designed to ensure you receive the care and support you deserve.

  • Burn Pit Registry: The VA created this registry in 2014 to collect data that helps us understand the potential health impacts of airborne hazards encountered during military service. By joining, you can contribute valuable information that will improve care for all veterans. If you served in Operations Desert Storm/Desert Shield (ODS), New Dawn (OND), or Iraqi Freedom/Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF), you are eligible to participate.

  • Health Care Application: VA health care covers care for your physical and mental health. This includes a range of services from checkups to surgeries to home health care. It also includes prescriptions and medical equipment. Apply online now.
  • Disibility Claim or Appeal Status: You can use this tool to check the status of a VA claim or appeal for compensation. Track your:
  • Disability compensation (including claims based on special needs like an automobile or clothing allowance)
  • Veterans or Survivors Pension benefits
  • Special monthly compensation (such as Aid and Attendance)
  • Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)
  • Burial allowance to help pay for a Veteran’s burial and funeral expenses

You can also use this tool to check the status of a claim or appeal for other benefits like these:

  • VA health care
  • GI Bill or other education benefits
  • Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E)
  • A home loan Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
